Egyptian state maritime transport sector development strategy includes many aspects. First of which is development of maritime ports especially ports’ infra-structure:
Where Egypt has 19 commercial ports, 14 are accomplished and ongoing their development on Mediterranean and Red Sea; the development process includes establishment of 5 new ports which are Abu Qir, ElMax, Gargoub, Bernees and Taba.
: Then come the new berths and terminals
: This by planning for establishment of berths and terminals of lengths 70km, depth18-25m. Egyptian ports have received 1.6 milliard cargo ton, 72 million container during the period 2015/2024; in 2024 have received 210 million cargo ton, 9 million container amongst which 5 million transits
Also, breakwaters have been established of length 35km in Alex, Damietta, Arish and Gargoub. And dredging of navigational channels up till 18/25 m depth and 21 drowned vessels have been elevated at Alex port
This in addition to increasing areas from 40m2 in 2014 to 75 million in 2025; by expending horizontally and vertically.
Moreover, there are modernization of equipment and services through providing 44 berth winch and 128 winch yards to deal with giant vessels and raising number of maritime trailers to 52 trailers in 2025. And targeted 80 trailers in 2030.And importance of applying Green Ports system and converting into smart ports and linking electronically between working entities. All terminals work bt AI and automated control system.
And the development in international logistic channels aims at linking regions of industrial, mining and agricultural production with seaports and converting Egypt into a regional center for trade and logistics, and the seven channels are: Sukhna/Alex, Taba/Arish, Cairo/ Alex, Tanta/Mansoura/ Damietta, Gargoub/ElSaloom, Cairo/Aswan/Abu Sinbel, Safaga/ Kena/ Abu Tartour.
Worth noting here is Egypt achievements in global classifications: where East Port Said port ranked third internationally and first regionally in World Bank classification CPPI 2024, and also came 53 among best 100 container port for the year 2025 (Lloyds List. Also, Damietta port was among Top 20 global container terminal CPPI 2024 and ranked tenth globally in annual development and improvement. Also, Alex [port ranked 90 globally among Top 100 port for the year 2025. Whereas Sukhna port has achieved a score in Guinness encyclopedia being deepest industrially dredged port of depth 19m. and is ready to score more as one of longest berths of 18km. Moreover, Abu Qir being deepest port on the Mediterranean with depth 22m.
Thus, it is obvious that such projects implemented during past years set Egypt in a competitive global status and founded an infra-structure that makes Egyptian ports more attracting and capable of competing, hence enhancing Egypt status being a regional center for transport, logistics and transit trade.
