Experimental operation of container terminal number 1 at sokhna port has started, which prime minister has witnessed its launch, in a step that comes within the framework of the state’s plan to convert Egypt into a regional center for transport, logistics and transit trade.
The new terminal is considered a distinguished addition for Egyptian ports; where its berth reaches 1200m, draught of depth reaching 18m, so as to allow for receiving giant vessels, and the terminal’s operational capacity reaches about 1.7 million TEU annually, so Ain Sokhna port witnesses now a great development where total berths’ lengths currently is 23 km.

The new terminal depends on latest global technology in the field of ports; where remotely controlled systems are being used for cranes and different terminal’s components, this shows the state’s keenness to cope with technical development to guarantee rapidness and efficient handling. The work system is based on partnership with the private sector and the state also aims at attracting major specialized global companies to work in Egyptian ports; concession partnership in management and operation.

Moreover, ports’ development is not in isolation from rest of transport sectors, as there is integration between maritime ports and multipurpose transport system, and Sokhna port will be linked with high speed electric train ( Sokhna – Matrouh), hence creating a logistic hub that links Red Sea with the Mediterranean, and facilitates exports and cargo transport traffic to European countries, in addition to linkage with road network, logistic regions and dry ports.

In fact, there are huge investments that the state’s pumps in this sector, and in the comprehensive maritime transport developmental plan. Including development of ports, maritime fleet and strategic partnerships that has reached 300 milliard pounds, this to implement “Egypt vision 2030” to maximize benefitting from Egypt Geographical location.
