Transport ministry has published “ Safaga2” multipurpose terminal implementation works; one of the strategic projects implemented amongst a comprehensive plan that aims at enhancing maritime transport capabilities and converting Egypt into a regional center for transport. Logistics and transit trade.

The project is being implemented amongst the plan of establishment of Grand Safaga port and developing Egyptian ports, raising their operational efficiency and increasing their capacity to receive different types of vessels and cargo.

The terminal in on an area of about 776 thousandm2, in addition to establishing a maritime berth of length 1100m, depth17 m, so as to receive big vessels, whereas infra-structure works has been accomplished 100% by specialized national companies and are now to begin the terminal’s super structure works.
The capacity of the terminal is expected to reach 500 thousand TEU annually, plus receiving and handling about 7 million ton of cargo annually, hence enhancing Safaga port ability to serve exports imports and trade traffic, and adds its competitiveness amongst Red Sea ports.

The project is one of the main components of implementing the comprehensive logistic corridor ( Safaga- Kena- Abu Tartour); one of the seven international logistic corridors that Egypt is implementing to link maritime ports with production, mining and industrial regions, to participate in supporting internal and foreign trade traffic and maximize benefit from economic resources.

The new terminal is considered a main gate for Upper Egypt development, where it participates in serving mining activities related to Golden Triangle project, in addition to supporting export and import processes and linking developmental projects at north, mid and South Upper Egypt with maritime ports.

It will also participate in attracting investments in fields of industry, logistic services, storage, manufacturing and compiling industries
Also decided that Safaga port will be linked with High Speed Electric train third line, hence enhancing cargo transport through railways from Upper Egypt governorates as Kena, Asuit, Aswan and Luxor , to the port, thus lessening pressure on land and roads and improving transport system efficiency.

In same context, transport ministry has already signed commitment granting building and developing super structure and management, operation and maintenance of the terminal; this within the framework of cooperation plan with specialized global companies to guarantee applying highest efficiency and operation criteria and copying with global trade and navigational development, thus enhancing national economy and Egyptian ports’ ability to attract international navigational lines.
