As part of international cooperation to protect the marine environment, Alexandria Port Authority, in coordination with the Maritime Transport & Logistics Sector, welcomed Mr. Guido Van Meel, the Regional Consultant of the MED-PLUS Project, during his official visit to Egypt from 15 to 17 September 2025, which included Alexandria Port and Marina Marassi.

The field visit included tours of several key facilities at Alexandria Port, such as the Environmental Protection Units, repair and maintenance areas, the passenger terminal and various berths. Meetings were also held with port officials and marine works contractors to follow up on the project’s implementation on the ground and identify key challenges and needs. The visit further extended to Marina Marassi to explore its capacities in marine waste management and yacht services.

The visit concluded with the National Workshop held at the headquarters of Alexandria Port Authority, with the participation of representatives from several national and regional entities, including the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency, the National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries, the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport and the IMO Regional Presence Office, in addition to representatives from the Maritime Transport and Logistics  Sector and other stakeholders.

During the workshop, technical presentations were delivered on topics including guidelines for ship waste collection, biofouling management, port obligations under MARPOL Annex V and the impact of marine litter on the marine environment. The workshop also reviewed observations noted during the field visits to Alexandria Port and Marina Marassi and discussed proposed actions to enhance marine waste management systems in ports and marinas.

The MED-PLUS Project aims to strengthen the capacities of Mediterranean countries in managing marine litter and to build an integrated and sustainable system for waste management in commercial ports and yacht marinas, thereby achieving a balance between development needs and the protection of the marine environment.
