The Ministry of Transport is establishing a container terminal at “BERTH 100” in Dekheila Port. A contract for the construction of the superstructure, management, operation, utilization, maintenance and re-delivery of the terminal; “B.O.T Contract”, was previously signed between the Alexandria Port Authority and the (Hutchison-COSCO-CMA-MSC) alliance.
A berth of 1,200 m in length is being constructed, out of the aggregate length of “BERTH 100” which amounts to 1,680 m overall, a depth of 18 m, an area of approximately 840,000 m3, and a capacity up to 1.5 million TEUs/year.
The establishment of the terminal with such depth aims at allowing the terminal to receive gigantic vessels with a length of 400 meters.
The rest of the area of “BERTH 100” will be used in the handling of general and ro-ro cargoes so as to increase the volume of handled containers and cargoes.
The Ports of Alexandria and Dekheila are being developed as part of the plan to establish “The Great Port of Alexandria” and to develop all Egyptian Ports to achieve the grander goal of transforming Egypt to be a global center of trade and logistics.
This comes within the framework of the directives of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, to establish the Sokhna/Dekheila integrated logistics container terminal project to link the Red Sea and the Mediterranean, which is considered the largest logistical corridor to serve global trade between the East and the West, and provides more than 2,000 direct and indirect job opportunities.
