In a strategic move that strengthens Egypt’s position on the global trade map, Lieutenant General Engineer Kamel El-Wazir, Minister of Transport, announced the arrival of three giant quay cranes and six yard cranes at the multi-purpose terminal (Safaga 2) at Safaga Port. This milestone comes as part of completing the terminal’s superstructure works within the broader Safaga Grand Port development plan, and in implementation of the directives of His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to transform Egypt into a regional hub for transport, logistics, and transit trade.

Global technology to enhance efficiency
The arriving cranes, classified as Super Post-Panamax and manufactured by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries (ZPMC), represent a qualitative leap in the terminal’s capabilities. The three quay cranes (STS type) are designed to handle large-capacity vessels and accelerate container handling cycles. Meanwhile, the six yard cranes (RTG type) operate automatically using smart systems, reducing human error and improving operational efficiency. This positions the terminal as a key gateway for the development of Upper Egypt.

The importance of Safaga 2 extends beyond maritime operations. It serves as a fundamental pillar for supporting mining activities within the Golden Triangle project and acts as a vital link connecting development projects in northern, central, and southern Upper Egypt to the port. The terminal also plays a central role in the integrated logistics corridor (Safaga – Qena – Abu Tartur), one of seven international corridors implemented by the state to enhance freight transport via railways and attract investments in logistics services and value-added industries.

The terminal is supported by a strong infrastructure executed by Egyptian national companies, with a completion rate of 100%. Its key specifications include:

  • Total area: approximately 776,000 m²
  • Berth dimensions: 1,100 meters in length and 17 meters in depth
  • Capacity: 2 million TEUs annually, and 7 million tons of general cargo
  • Includes administrative buildings, workshops, warehouses, and advanced safety and security systems

It is worth noting that the Ministry of Transport has signed the final agreement with AD Ports Group to grant the concession for building and developing the superstructure, as well as managing and operating the terminal. This partnership is part of the Ministry’s strategy to cooperate with leading global companies to ensure the highest levels of efficiency and keep pace with global maritime developments, supporting national economic growth and enhancing the competitiveness of Egyptian ports to attract top international shipping lines.
