Within the framework of enhancing Maritime cooperation between the Arab Republic of Egypt and the Hellenic Republic the second meetings of the Egyptian-Greek High-Level Joint Maritime Committee was held in Piraeus to coordinate and discuss the enhancement of maritime cooperation between the two countries.
The committee was co-chaired by their excellences Rear Admiral Hassien El-Jeziry, President of the Maritime Transport & Logistics Sector, and Dr. Evangelos Kyriazopoulos- Secretary General -Maritime Affairs & Ports at the Hellenic Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, with High level representatives from both sides.
The meeting emphasized the successful and effective cooperation between the two countries in the field of maritime transport, based on the 1981 Commercial Navigation Agreement.
Reference was also made to the successful results of the first Joint Maritime Committee (JMC) held in Alexandria on May 29-30, 2024, and in Athens on June 3-4, 2024.
Their excellences’ and Esteemed Members of both sides discussed and agreed on continuing cooperation to encourage establishing Ro-Ro lines and commercial links between Greek and Egyptian ports, in addition to enhancing cooperation in the field of green ports and sustainable green transportation
n. Mutual support was also emphasized for the ongoing project to establish a Ro-Ro line for the transport of goods and passengers between the ports of Alexandria and Volos.
A road map was developed to enhance cooperation in the field of cruise tourism as a vital economic sector for cooperation, including support for a joint promotion dialogue to encourage cruise companies to operate regular trips at the bilateral and trilateral levels (Egypt, Greece, and Cyprus).
The two sides also discussed enhancing cooperation in the field of seafarer training, completing negotiations on the memorandum of understanding for the mutual recognition of seafarer certificates in accordance with the STCW Convention, and exploring ways to enhance cooperation between educational institutions in both countries and propose mechanisms for implementing this joint cooperation.
Mutual cooperation and support within the framework of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) was also highlighted, as well coordination of positions regarding the upcoming elections in November 2025.
The second day, Tuesday, September 30, witnessed an official visit by the Egyptian delegation to the Port of Piraeus and the ONEX shipyard in Elefsina.
The Egyptian side expressed their utmost appreciation to the Greek side for the warm welcome and efforts that contributed to the success of the Maritime Committee, considering it an effective cooperation mechanism and a fundamental pillar for activating maritime cooperation to achieve mutual benefit for the two countries.
The Hellenic side expressed their appreciation to the Egyptian side and emphasized the importance of maritime cooperation between the two countries, given that Egypt and Greece are established maritime countries with influence at the regional and international levels.
It was agreed to hold the third committee in Alexandria in 2026.
