The commercial experimental operation of “Tahia Misr 1” container terminal at Damietta port is considered a leap in Egyptian ports capabilities and reflects the state’s success in attracting direct foreign investments in maritime transport sector and logistic services, as investments of about 600 million dollars has been pumped in the project by giant German maritime shipping:” Hapag-Lloyd”.

The project is an international investment cooperation that includes major international companies in managing and operating container terminals and they are: German EUROJET, Italian KINTSHIP and the global navigation line:” Hapag-Lloyd”.

The terminal enjoys advanced technical and operational capabilities, first of which is the berths of lengths reaching 1970m, depths reaching 18m allowing to receive biggest container vessels in the world. This in addition to a hinterland and storage yards of total area reaching 922 thousand m2 and of capacity reaching 3.5 million TEU; hence noticeably raising the operational capacity of the port
Therefore, the experimental commercial operation of the terminal will lead to increasing Damietta port competitiveness on regional ports’ map, and supports import and export traffic and also reduces logistic cost, thus positively reflecting on industry and business community and enhances Egypt readiness to convert into a regional center for container handling and transit services in the Middle- East
