Transport ministry is implementing its ambitious plan to develop Egyptian ports, most outstanding of which is project of Safaga 2 multipurpose terminal at Safaga maritime port. Which is considered a part of “ Grand Safaga port, that aims at converting Egypt into a regional center for transport, logistics and transit trade.
And according to transport ministry latest statement, the project is implemented on an area of 776 thousand m2, and the terminal has a berth of length 1100m, depth reaching 17m, and infrastructure works of the terminal have been accomplished 100% by a national specialized company of high efficiency, and currently super structure works of the terminal has started as an introduction for its operation.
The ministry has also pointed out that planned that the terminal will enjoy a huge capacity, as expected that it will accommodate two million container annually, in addition to its ability to receive general cargo of about 7 million ton per year, and decided that it will be operated after total accomplishment of superstructure.
The terminal’s implementation comes as a main part of the comprehensive logistic channel ( Safaga- Kena- Abu Tartour ) which is considered one of the 7 international logistic channels implemented by the Egyptian state.
Safaga 2 terminal is considered a main gateway for developing Upper Egypt region, where it participates drastically in:
- Serving all mining activities of the Golden Triangle Region.
– Supporting export and import business.
- Participating in benefitting from developmental projects in northern central and southern Upper Egypt regions and their link with the port.
- Attracting investments in the fields of industry, storage and logistic services and manufacturing industries and compiling.
- Getting containers and cargoes from south valley to Safaga port.
- Maximizing cargo transport using railways; where Safaga port will be linked with high- speed electric train third line; hence lessening pressure on roads especially of Upper Egypt governorates as Kena, Asuit, Luxor and Aswan.
