The Maritime Transport and Logistic Sector, in coordination with the International Maritime Organization (IMO), organized a workshop on Monday, July 21, 2025, at the main hall of Alexandria Port Authority, titled “Advancing Green Transition in the Egyptian Maritime Sector.”

The workshop marked the launch of the GREENVOYAGE2050 program granted to Egypt by the IMO to develop a national action plan (NAP) for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from maritime transport.

The workshop was opened by a speech from the Head of the Maritime Transport & Logistics Sector, delivered by his Deputy for Maritime Affairs, RADM.Sherif Zakaria, who expressed his gratitude to IMO and its experts for organizing this important workshop. He noted that it reflects the continued support of IMO to its members within the framework of its technical cooperation program to achieve safety and marine environmental protection goals. He also extended his thanks to the leadership and staff of Alexandria Port Authority for their tireless cooperation in organizing the event.

He concluded his speech by thanking all attendees, wishing them all success, and expressing his hope that this workshop would be a step forward on Egypt’s green transition path in maritime transport—a milestone objective of the Egypt’s Vision 2030 and all maritime transport strategies.

The workshop was attended by representatives from relevant entities, including the Ministries of Environment, Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Electricity and Renewable Energy; as well as authorities such as Egyptian Ports, Suez Canal Authority, Suez Canal Economic Zone, and the Egyptian Authority for Maritime Safety. Also in attendance were the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport and shipping companies including National Navigation and Mahoney, as well as Sources Biofuel Production Company

The Workshop included a presentation from the Egyptian side (Maritime Transport & Logistics Sector) outlining the state’s efforts toward a green transition. This was followed by a presentation from IMO experts about the organization’s history, its role in maritime decarbonization, an overview of the GREENVOYAGE2050 program—its goals, expected outcomes, and general steps for developing a national action plan to reduce GHG emissions. Participants were then divided into working groups to discuss the needs and challenges of the energy, shipping, and port sectors in implementing this plan.

In conclusion, both IMO experts and participants praised the significance and organization of the workshop, expressing hopes for continued collaboration among all relevant national entities to ensure the successful implementation of the plan.
