Ports of port Said and Alexandria were amongst list of best African ports according to global “Lloyd’s List” classification for top 100 container ports in the world for the year 2025, in a new achievement that enhance Egypt status being a hub center for international maritime trade, and an appreciation for its distinguished performance and development in fields of operation, infrastructure and logistic services.
The African list included 4 ports only from the continent which are Port Said, Alexandria in Egypt , Tangier in Morocco and Lomi in Togo; this according to Lloyds classification and was conveyed by “ Business Africa “ platform and was based on container handling data for the year 2024. Total container handling in top 100 ports all in all reached 743.6 million TEU – measuring unit for containers’ volume in 2024 with an increase of 8.1% compared with previous year. The classification reveals continuation of Asian dominance over maritime trade; where Chinese ports come top of list and Singapore ports maintains their position amongst top 10 in the world. The report has also pointed out that maritime transport sector has witnessed important changes in recent years , with concentration on improving ports’ efficiency and developing the infrastructure and enhancing digital role and environment sustainability
This assures the great development in Egyptian ports capabilities, with regards to infra-structure, operation efficiency, container handling volume, hence reflecting the state’s strategy to convert Egypt into an international logistic gateway. Worth noting that, Port Said port affiliated to Suez Canal Economic Zone SCEZ has won third place internationally and first regionally in performance index (CPPI) for the year 2024 issued by the World Bank, to assure on the port’s status being one of the fastest developed ports and most efficient globally.
