Studies related to maritime labor

Studies undertaken by the Division:

  • The development of human cadres for maritime transport services and the creation of skills and professionals capable of coping with the needs and requirements of labor market on the regional and international level (August 2004).

Studies undertaken outside the Division:

  • The development of human resources to raise the performance levels in Alexandria port (August2004).
  • Skills development at Arabian ports (May 2004).

The development of the human resources skills in Arab ports (May 2004):

The entity that carried out the study:

Researches and Consultations Center affiliated to the Maritime Transport Sector-Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport.

The objective of the Study:

The development of human resources in Arab maritime ports’ industry

Recommendations:-

  • Benefiting from the training institutes in Arab ports and developing them.
  • Setting a plan to prepare a standard description for different professional categories in Arab ports in accordance with international criteria.
  • Providing financial allocations for joint training.

The development of human resources to raise the performance levels at Alexandria port (August 2004):

The entity that carried out the study:

Researches and Consultations Center affiliated to the Maritime Transport Sector-Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport

The objective of the Study:

The development of human cadres working in Alexandria Port Authority.

Results:

  • Very large organizational chart –duplication of some jobs.
  • The absence of a marketing department to undergo the marketing of port services
  • Human resources are not fully utilized with the presence of over-staff in some fields and shortage in others

Recommendations:

  • Giving privilege to the tenders of companies that will provide services in the port using B.O.T system if they include plans for the employment of over- staff at the port or if they provide alternative training option for these labor.
  • Setting the necessary mechanism that focus on the proper development and planning of training courses

Aim of the study:

Development of human cadres working in the General Authority of Alexandria Port.

Results:

Inflated current organizational structure, duplication of some functions. The lack of a marketing department based on marketing port services. The lack of optimal operation of human resources and the accumulation of workers in some areas and their shortage in others. Recommendations: Giving preference to the bids of companies that will provide services in the port using the B.O.T system, in case they are included in the plans to employ excess labor at the port or perhaps a transfer training is conducted for them. Develop the necessary mechanism that works on the good preparation of the training courses and its prior planning.
