Introduction
The report presents the activity of the Egyptian main ports handling vessels, cargo, container and passenger traffic during 2001-2006, illustrating the changing rates in 2006 compared to 2005. In addition, the report presents the status of the Egyptian Fleet (Vessels and Maritime Units) and data regarding Maritime passports and holders of qualification certificates. The report is concluded with the financial status clarifying the incomes and expenditures of financial year 2005/2006.
In 2006, the total throughput of the Egyptian main ports reached about 106.6 million tons compared to about 97.5 million tons in 2005 with a growth rate of 9.4%. For the first time, handled containers reached 4.6 million TEUs compared to 3.6 million TEUs in 2005 with a growth rate of 25%.
The total number of vessels crossing the Suez Canal reached 18664 vessels compared to 18193 vessels (with 2.6% increase than last year).
