The performance indicators in the Egyptian main ports

  • Number of the main Egyptian commercial ports: 15
    • It handled about 97.5 million tons of cargo, 3.7 million TEUs and 3.7 million passengers. The percentage of local containerized cargo has reached 14.6%. Also, transshipped containers have reached 2.4 million containers, including 20.8 million tons without including the container's weight.
  • Number of the Main Egyptian commercial ports berths: 177.
  • Total berths length: 35.3 km (Main Ports: 32.3 km - Specialized Ports: 3 km).
  • Number of container terminals: 6
    • Contracts had been signed for the establishment of 3 new container terminals in Alexandria, El-Dekheila and Damietta.
  • The average of vessels dwell time in ports: 3.5 day.
  • Alexandria port was the most frequented port of vessels' calls: 23%
  • Red Sea Port Authority had the biggest share in passengers' calls: 81.3%
  • Port Said Port Authority (PSPA) is the biggest port that participated in handling containers: 41.9%
    • The total handled TEUs at PSPA are estimated by 1.5 million TEUs (most of them are transshipped containers 87.9%). In the second position comes Damietta Port Authority. Thus, Damietta port terminal has surpassed the one million containers limit in 2004 and 2005 successively, considering that in 2004, Damietta container terminal was classified among the best 100 container terminal in the world and occupied the first position in Africa.
  • The percentage of achieved capacity from the maximum capacity of Egyptian ports in cargo handling: 75%
  • Alexandria Port Authority is the biggest authority participating in cargo handling: 41.8%.
  • The percentage of handled dry bulk cargo out of the total handled in the main Egyptian ports: 33.9%
  • The percentage of handled liquid bulk in main ports out of the total handled in these ports: 5.4%
  • Percentage of transshipped cargo (in tons) of the total handled cargo in Egyptian ports: 21.7%
    • The biggest side of handling transshipped cargo has concentrated in Damiette and Port-Said Ports.
