TEUs Traffic in the Egyptian ports

The Egyptian ports handled 3.7 million TEUs in 2005 compared to 2.9 million TEUs in 2004 with a 26% increase, where the transshipped containers represent 2.4 million TEUs, which mean 65.3% of the total handled containers. The targeted rate in 2007 is 5 million TEUs.
Handled local containers have increased with 12.3% in 2005 compared to 2004, while handled transshipped containers have increased with 34.7%.

It is noticed that the increase rate of transshipped containers exceeds the increase rate of local containers. About 2/3 of the containers handled in the Egyptian ports are Transshipment, which is an indicator of the significance of this activity in the Egyptian ports in the future and the necessity of benefiting from the value-added activities in ports hinterland.
