Introduction
The report presents the activity of the Egyptian main and specialized ports
including the vessels' traffic, cargo and container handling and also
passengers' traffic during a five year period (2001-2005), illustrating the
changing rates in 2005 compared to 2004.
The report also presents the status of the Egyptian Fleet
(Vessels and Maritime Units) and data regarding Maritime passports and holders
of qualification certificates. Then, it presents decisions, conventions,
seminars, training courses and higher studies in the field of maritime
transport. The report has also discussed the Egyptian situation regarding the
protection of maritime environment and the insurance of maritime safety and
authenticated navigation agencies and tariffs collected from it. The report
ends with the financial status clarifying the incomes and expenditures of
financial year 2004/2005.
The total throughput of the Egyptian main and specialized ports reached about
329 million tons in 2005 compared to about 329 million tons in 2004 with an
increase of 6.1%, including the throughput of the specialized ports and Sumid
(Loading – Discharging). For the first time, the handled containers reached 3.7
million TEUs compared to 2.9 million TEUs in 2004 with an increase of 26%.
The total number of vessels passing the Suez Canal reached 18193 vessels (with
8.2% increase than last year), as well as 17816 vessels calling at the Egyptian
(main and specialized) ports with a total of more than 36 thousand vessels and
with a 13.1% increase than last year, in addition to around 4200 yachts calling
at Taba and Port Ghalib Ports.
The Egyptian, Arab and foreign private sector investments
that are being undertaken by the Maritime Transport Sector in respect of the
maritime industry activities are estimated by 8-10 billion Egyptian pounds
until December 1st, 2006. The total income of companies and authorities in the
Maritime Transport Industry, which have been reckoned until now, exceed 13
billion pounds.
