*The main Egyptian commercial ports witnessed in 2004 a remarkable operational upswing. They received 13565 vessels, handled 82.2 million tons of cargo, 2.9 million TEUs and received 2.8 million passengers with an increase up to 14.2%, 11.4%, 27.4% and 0.8% consecutively compared with 2003 apart from the throughput of the specialized port:227 million tons. Thus the total throughput of the Egyptian ports exceeded 310 million tons. The total number of vessels calling at the Egyptian ports exceeded 15.000 vessels apart from the vessels passing through Suez Canal (16850 vessels).

*The most flagrant remark is the significant decrease in the vessels dwell time in ports that reached 10.3% in spite of the increase in the number of vessels as well as the total handled cargoes and containers.

* Another remark is that this increase occurred while several development projects were ongoing in Alexandria and Damietta ports and without calculating East Port Said and Edco.

* Transshipment containers also increased with 27.3% compared with the previous year which is a very important indicator especially when comparing with the neighboring ports.
