Egyptian Fleet

The Egyptian flag vessels registered in the Egyptian Authority for the Safety of Maritime Navigation with deadweight over 500 tons reached 164 vessels including 96 vessels of merchant fleet (54 vessels operate with dead weight over 1.1 million tons), 53 service vessels and 16 coastal oil tankers apart from 55 Egyptian owned vessels flying foreign flags including 34 vessels with tonnage over 500 tons with call sign (deadweight of about 220.000 tons).

Number of Egyptian Fleet vessels 175 vessels including:

  • Merchant fleet vessels with deadweight > 500 ton 95 vessels (Operating vessels:54 vessels).
  • Service vessels with deadweight > 500 tons: 53 vessels.
  • Coastal oil tankers>500 tons: 16 vessels.
  • Other vessels with deadweight < 500 tons: 11 vessels.

Maritime Units

  • Number of maritime units: 19000 units.
  • Including 3200 fishing units.

Service Vessels (approved to operate in Egypt) 237 vessels including

  • Egyptian: 103 vessels.
  • Foreign: 134 vessels.

Conclusion:

Egyptian owned vessels can carry about 12% of the Egyptian foreign trade. Unfortunately they carry only 5.2% since the merchant fleet is in a bad need of crude fuel high sea tankers, liquified natural gas tankers and container vessels. Egypt has to provide these types of vessels in the future and has to renew and increase the number of existing general cargo and dry bulk vessels. There is great investment opportunities in owning vessels operating in non coastal maritime services for petroleum and gas fields and platforms to replace the foreign vessels representing currently 60% of operating vessels (approximately 135 vessels are foreign units operating in the Egyptian waters/ year).

The Egyptian Fleet compared with the International Fleet:

  • The Egyptian Fleet occupied the 43rd place on the global level in respect of types and deadweight (Egypt precedes Saudi Arabia & Kuwait).
  • The Egyptian Fleet occupied the 34th place on the global level for bulk vessels (no Arab countries preceded Egypt).
  • The Egyptian Fleet including the Egyptian owned vessels and the vessels flying the foreign flag occupied the 29th place on the international level (no Arab country preceded Egypt which is considered a very important indicator).
  • Passengers’ vessels including the Egyptian owned vessels and vessels flying foreign flags occupied the 22nd place on the international level (Egypt preceded all the Arab and African countries).
  • The maritime services vessels occupied the 20 th place on the international level.
  • The Egyptian passengers’, cargoes and all other carriers occupied the 13th place on the developing countries level.
  • The Egyptian Fleet’s (flying the Egyptian flag) capacity: 1.12 million ton and can transport more than 12% of the Egyptian foreign trade (66.7 million ton) but it transported only 3 million ton (4.5%) of the Egyptian foreign local trade. besides mother ships flying the foreign flags and Egyptian owned which raised the percentage to: 5.2%. This indicator is different from previous years and emphasizes the need to raise the performance and operation efficiency of the fleet before increasing the number of vessels.
  • N.B.:vessels flying the Egyptian flag and Egyptian owned vessels are granted the same treatment in all the Egyptian Ports according to resolution no. (21) for 1996, especially in respect of tariffs and exemptions.
