The Holding Company of Maritime & Land Transport
14 maritime transport companies are affiliated to the Holding Company of Maritime
& Land Transport. There are interlaced relations between the Holding Company and
its affiliated companies through the participation of Egyptian Ports Authorities
in the capital of the Container Handling Companies. Moreover, there is a full coordination
concerning addressing the problems that the clients of the affiliated companies
face, the Egyptian position in the bilateral and international agreements on maritime
transport and seamen not to mention the supervision of Ports Authorities on the
companies operating within the ports.
Maritime Agencies
In the framework of the privatization of maritime transport companies and the encouragement
of the Private Sector, 207 permits were issued to operate maritime agencies.
The relation between MTS and maritime agencies is as follows:
- The maritime agent collects the maritime agency fees for the benefit of MTS as well
as the fees of participation in the International Seafarers clubs according to the
resolutions issued for this purpose and supplies it to the Port Authority where
he works.
- The MTS, in his turn, request the port Authorities to pay this income by cheques
up to 60millionL.E./year and it returns to the General Budget of the country as
sovereign dues. The maritime agents submits an unconditioned letter of guarantee
to MTS according to the Ministerial Decree no. 520for 2003.
- Bind the maritime agencies to implementing the cabinet decree no. 506 for 2003 concerning
selling 75% of foreign currency to one of the recognized Egyptian Banks according
to the official price.
- Request a monthly statement from the maritime agencies where they should indicate
the number of handled vessels and the reimbursed agency fees to be submitted to
the port authorities in order to verify this statement according to authorities
income.
The General Egyptian Storehouses Company:
Undertakes the management of yards and storehouses in most of the Egyptian ports.The
company is planning to complete the storage yards in the rest of the Egyptian ports
under joint contracts and conditions set by the two parties.
