Container Handling in Egyptian Main Ports

Egyptian ports handled 5.1 million TEUs in 2007 compared to 4.6 million TEUs in 2006 with a 11.1% increase, where transit containers represent 3.3 million TEUs, which mean 64.6% of the total handled containers.

Port Said Port Authority is the largest authority participating in handling containers occupying 54.3% of the total handled containers in Egyptian ports with a total handled of 2.8 million TEUs (the most of which are transit containers with 87.1%). Alexandria Port Authority occupies the second position 976.6 thousand TEU.

Local container handling increased in 2007 with 24.3% compared to 2006. In addition, transit container handling increased with 5%.
It was noticed that the increase rate of transit containers increased and that 2/3 of the containers handled in the Egyptian ports are transit containers, which is an indicator of the significance of this activity in the Egyptian ports in the future and the necessity of benefiting from the value-added activities in ports hinterland of Egyptian Ports.
