Statistics
A) Total Handled Container Traffic
Container Handling in Egyptian Main Ports
Egyptian ports handled 4.6 million TEUs in 2006 compared to
3.7 million TEUs in 2005 with a 25% increase, where transit containers
represent 3.1 million TEUs, which mean 68.4% of the total handled containers.
It implies that the handled in Egyptian Ports of TEUs in 2007 would exceed the
targeted, which is estimated by about 5 million TEUs.
Port Said Port Authority is the largest authority participating in handling
containers occupying 58.2% of the total handled containers in Egyptian ports
with a total handled of 2.7 million TEUs (the most of which are transit
containers with 89.1%). Damietta Port Authority occupies the second position.
Hence, Port Said Port (East and West) leaped to become number 5 in the
Mediterranean Sea during 2005, number 60 in the world, number 1 in Egyptian
ports regarding the rate of container handling and number 3 in the world
regarding the growth rate (that has reached 80%).
Local container handling increased in 2006 with 14.1%
compared to 2005. In addition, transit container handling increased with 30.9%.
It was noticed that the increase rate of transit containers increased and that
2/3 of the containers handled in the Egyptian ports are transit containers,
which is an indicator of the significance of this activity in the Egyptian
ports in the future and the necessity of benefiting from the value-added
activities in ports hinterland of Egyptian Ports.
