Containers traffic In Egyptian Port

The Egyptian ports handled 2.9 million TEUs in 2004 compared with 2.3 million TEUs (a 27.4% increase in which the transshipment containers represent 1.77 million TEUs which means 61%). The local containers handling increased with 21.3% in 2004 compared with 2003. The transshipment containers handling increased with 27.3%. The targeted rate is 5 million TEUs in 2007.

Once more, we find that the increase rate of transshipment containers exceeds the increase rate of local containers. About 2/3 of the containers handled in the Egyptian ports are transshipments which is an indicator of the significance of this activity in the Egyptian ports in the future and the necessity of benefiting from the value-added activities in ports hinterland.
