Introduction
The report presents the activity of the Egyptian main and
specialized ports including the traffic of vessels, cargoes, containers and
passengers during a five year period (2000-2004). The report also presents the
changing rates in 2004 compared with 2003. It addresses the incomes and
expenditures of the Egyptian Ports five year plan.
The total throughput of the Egyptian main and specialized
ports reached 310 million tons in 2004 compared with 277 million tons in 2003
including the throughput of the specialized ports and Sumed. For the first
time, the handled containers reached 2.9 million ton TEUs compared with 2.3
million TEUs in 2003 (an increase of 11.9% and 26.1% consecutively). The total
number of vessels passing through Suez Canal reached 16850 as well as 15.000
vessels calling at the Egyptian ports. (Total: 32.000 vessels with a 14.2%
increase).
The expenditures spent on the Egyptian ports in 2003/2004
were 0.8 milliard L.E. Their direct incomes were 2.2 milliard L.E. besides the
indirect incomes from the customs and other entities and apart from the
Egyptian, Arab and foreign private sector investments that are being undertaken
by the Maritime Transport Sector in respect of the maritime industry activities
estimated with 11 milliard L.E.
